Here is a question, how can England pull out of Iraq with pretty much no fanfare, yet our obligation remains? Well besides the fact that we fucked the place up in the first place, just our ego.
Here is the deal, the US messed with a tested and true system and went for broke on a long shot. To make it simple, the 'state' based international relations system is by far the most peaceful and beneficial system that has ever existed. Well the US said, 'lets get rid of Sadam and get someone better in their'. Well they forgot about a milleniums worth of bad blood that was suppressed by his regime. Now not only do we not have the same level of security as we once previously had, the US is basically ass fucking themselves because we have obligated themselves into staying there for forever because the US sucks at admitting defeat.
So our real options are limited, but if I were a gambling man (which I am) I would put my money on mass genocide and civil war for the next 4-10 years.
